Installing Google Play Services on Genymotion Virtual Devices

Genymotion is a popular Android emulator used for testing and development purposes. However, it does not come with Google Play Services pre-installed. In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps to install Google Play Services on a Genymotion virtual device.

Prerequisites

  • Genymotion version 2.10.0 or later
  • VirtualBox version 6.0 or later
  • A Genymotion virtual device with an Android version supported by Google Play Services

Method 1: Installing GApps from the Emulator Toolbar (Genymotion 2.10.0 and later)

If you are using Genymotion version 2.10.0 or later, you can install GApps directly from the emulator toolbar.

  1. Open your Genymotion virtual device and click on the "GApps" button in the toolbar.
  2. Accept the Terms and Conditions to begin the download process.
  3. Once the download is complete, restart your virtual device.

Method 2: Installing GApps using OpenGapps (Genymotion 2.7.2 and later)

If you are using an earlier version of Genymotion or prefer to use OpenGapps, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the OpenGapps website (www.opengapps.org) and select the following options:
    • Platform: x86
    • Android version: Corresponding to your virtual device’s Android version
    • Variant: nano
  2. Download the zip file and drag-and-drop it onto your Genymotion virtual device.
  3. Follow the pop-up instructions to complete the installation.

Method 3: Manual Installation using ARM Translation Installer (older versions of Genymotion)

For older versions of Genymotion, you may need to use the ARM Translation Installer.

  1. Download the ARM Translation Installer v1.1 (ARMTI) and the Google Apps package for your Android version.
  2. Drag-and-drop the ARMTI onto your Genymotion virtual device and confirm all prompts.
  3. Reboot your emulator.
  4. Drag-and-drop the Google Apps package onto your virtual device and follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Tips and Variations

  • For Android 6.0 and later, you may not need to use the ARM Translation Installer.
  • If you encounter issues with Google Play Services crashing, try updating your installed Google Apps or waiting for the update prompt.
  • You can find the correct Google Apps version for your Android version on the XDA Developers forum or OpenGapps website.

By following these methods, you should be able to successfully install Google Play Services on your Genymotion virtual device.
