When working with file inputs in web browsers, you might notice that the path returned by the input field isn’t the actual, fully qualified path to the selected file. Instead, browsers often present a "fakepath" or just the file name itself. This behavior is a security measure, and understanding why it exists is crucial for building robust web applications.

Why the "Fakepath" or Limited Path?

Historically, web browsers allowed JavaScript access to the full local file system path of a selected file. This presented a significant security risk. A malicious website could potentially use this information to infer details about the user’s file system structure, potentially revealing sensitive information or even launching attacks.
