Selecting the First Element with a Given Class using CSS

In CSS, selecting elements based on their class is a common task. However, when it comes to selecting the first element with a given class, things can get a bit tricky. In this tutorial, we will explore how to achieve this using CSS selectors.

  2. The second rule selects all .red elements that come after any other .red element. Since the ~ combinator looks for siblings, this means that only .red elements that have a preceding .red element will be selected.
  3. By applying border: none to these subsequent .red elements, we effectively "undo" the border applied by the first rule.

This technique can be adapted for various use cases:

  • Filtering elements by other attributes, such as type selectors (e.g., article > p) or attribute selectors (e.g., [data-attribute])
  • Combining with pseudo-elements
  • Using with the Selectors API to select specific matches

Important Notes

Keep in mind that this technique assumes you know the default styles for your other sibling elements, so you can override them correctly. Additionally, since this involves overriding rules in CSS, you cannot achieve the same thing with a single selector for use with the Selectors API or Selenium’s CSS locators.

Alternative Solutions

While the above solution works well, there are alternative approaches worth mentioning:

  • Using jQuery’s :eq() or :first selectors (note that these function differently from :nth-child())
  • Utilizing the Selectors API to select specific matches using document.querySelector() or document.querySelectorAll()
